Where Else but the Closet & Storage Industry?

As the buzz continues in the aftermath of the Edison Conference, there is another story that needs to be told, a story about camaraderie.
With my airline reservation secured and my hotel accommodations firmly in place, I was prepared to travel early Tuesday morning for our ACSP Board meeting just prior to the main events beginning Tuesday afternoon. That trip never happened.
The Saturday before, my son and business partner, Josh, informed me that he had to return to Columbia, SC, to finish a commercial casework job we had started the week before.
From our home base in Savannah, it’s a 3-hour trip. As this was our first venture with a pizza restaurant franchise, we wanted to get it right. Josh announced Saturday that we were being awarded the next 6 restaurants and he was going to be tied up with negotiations.
As the great recession of 2006 and beyond reduced our staff from 27 to 5 employees, I was the ‘last man standing’ to cover the showroom, the phones, the shop, selling, designing, scheduling….you get the idea. With deep sadness, I informed the ACSP Board that I was unable to make it to Edison. This would be the very first CLOSETS/ACSP conference I had ever missed. I counted on getting the updates after the conference ended.
By Tuesday evening and continuing throughout Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday, I was inundated with emails, iPhone videos & phone calls. “Jeff….where are you?….what’s wrong?…..what’s happened?…..is everything okay?....we miss you.
I never in my wildest imagination thought that I would be missed like this. The friends, acquaintances and associates I have made in the past 28 years came bubbling to the surface.
It was very emotional.
Mike Carson sent rapid fire iPhone videos from the Tuesday night event. After the first 5, I texted back….”Stop it, I’m feeling terrible for not being there”. His reply was simply “I’m trying to make you feel GOOD”.
These gatherings of ‘Closeteers’ from all spectrums of the closet and storage industry are unlike any other I have heard of or experienced. If you have never attended one of these or have not attended recently, you really do not know what you’re missing. Where else but the closet industry can one guy (or gal) have so many friends that notice that you are not there in their midst?
You can believe that I will not miss the next one…..and you shouldn’t either.
