Since the very beginning of my involvement in 3D lamination, I’ve been aware of the problems associated with producing very long parts (4-foot-plus) in a membrane press.  One of my earliest experiences providing technical support involved a part that was 4 feet wide and nearly 8 feet in length. “I can’t even get one-third of the parts to come out acceptably,” said this frustrated producer.

The CPA's 3DL Task Force will work to promote industry best practices in the manufacture, marketing and specifying of 3D laminate components.

Success in 3D laminating starts with understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the materials and technology involved in the process.

This week I will be meeting with other industry professionals as part of the 3DL Task Force of the Composite Panel Association, to look at the issues of standards and education for 3D laminating.

Although it is true that every press technology has its place, there is no doubt that the three-chamber membrane press has become the system of choice for high production.

This week I’m taking a break from 3D laminating to cover an exciting development in the world of wood finishing that I had the pleasure of attending.
