Independent Film Channel's (IFC) sketch comedy series "Portlandia" cut up a few laughs in season 3, episode 8, which featured co-star Fred Armisen as a custom furniture maker.

For its August Man issue, the Portland Monthly staff wanted to highlight in a cover story and photo shoot someone living his life in a way that embodied manhood. Their pick? A former office worker turned furniture maker because he worked with his hands and embraced masculinity.

Several woodshop scenes showcasing a chop saw, power drill, dust vac and sander made the idea of the furniture guy quite appealing to a number of Portlandia characters...until they actually saw his finished furniture. Lesson: Quality generally trumps perception every time.
