Miller Wood Expands Component Capabilities

Miller Wood Designs combines “old world quality” with new technology to produce parts for cabinetry, furniture and stairs. Founded in 1993, the Sugarcreek, OH-based firm has 55-60 employees.

High-tech equipment has enabled MWD to expand its capabilities, including the rough milling, moulding, gluing and finishing.

New to the rough mill area is a WoodEye scanner which looks at all four sides to determine the optimized cutting area. The lumber runs through the Yates planer, to the Progressive Systems ripsaw, then via conveyor to the WoodEye, to the Eagle Talon saw and on to the Whirlwind saw.

Other machinery used at the 60,000-square-foot facility includes: Weinig moulders, gluers including an RF gluer, Timesavers planer/sanders, Extrema sanders and Friulmac machines.

Turnings are also an important part of business. Using the Hapfo CNC copy lathe along with the Balestrini double-sided copying shaper and sander, MWD can replicate turnings quickly and easily.

The company was one of eight woodworking facilities recently toured as part of the 2013 Wood Component Manufacturers Association's annual Conference and Plant Tour Event in September.
