Shellac Bugs at Work, Sauder's IKEA Cabinets in Top 10 Stories

Grodar-Beer-HammerBeer hammer: Grodar Furniture has useful tool, until empty.   Great tools have a magnetic attraction for woodworkers, so a beer hammer made from birch plywood and the Screw Grabber starter for non-magnetic screws were super popular stories this week. So was the story of the shellac-making bug, whose crusty protective coating secreted on tree branches in Asia and Thailand are converted to Liberon shellac. This typifies one aspect of the inquisitive "Mind of the Woodworker," subject of a groundbreaking research study to be presented at Cabinets & Closets Expo 2014.

So does the  story told by IKEA USA of its special relationship with Sauder Woodworking, which riveted the wood industry, and was the most-viewed report. Here are the week's top 10 stories:

IKEA inks a 5-year deal with Sauder Woodworking for furniture production. Sauder's Archbold, OH plant already produces IKEA kitchen cabinets. It now will hire 150 and invest $13 million to build furniture lines.

 IKEA expands production done for it by Sauder Woodworking's Archbold, OH plant. Currently producing kitchen cabinets, the Sauder Woodworking plant will add four furniture lines.

Wood and plastic toilet seat maker Sanderson Plumbing Products may close April 30 if a buyer is not found for its Columbus, MS plant. Founded in 1893, and bailed out by the state in 2012, it issued a WARN notice of 250 layoffs.

A fire shut down Town & Country Cabinets. The Gorham, ME firm is exclusive manufacturer of hand-made Shaker furniture for cataloger Sturbridge Yankee. Machinery including a CNC router may have been destroyed.

The Sutro Coat Rack is made of CNC precision-cut birch plywood, with a hand-rubbed oil-and-wax finish. The red-and-white Sutros are screen printed with an exterior-grade enamel.
