For nearly a half-century, Hollywood Woodwork of Hollywood, Florida, has been on the leading edge of architectural woodworking, providing architectural interiors for the hospitality industry, office buildings, retail space and custom homes throughout the United States and the Caribbean. The company manufactures custom products at its 60,000 square foot facility and ships them to each building site. On-site installation is performed by the company’s craftsmen.

Recently, Hollywood Woodwork put the finishing touches on a premier property for one of the newest Ritz-Carlton resorts – the Ritz-Carlton Reserve Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico. Hollywood Woodwork has a longstanding relationship with Ritz-Carlton, having provided interior work on hotels and resorts including the Ritz-Carlton Club in Jupiter, Florida, the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman and the Ritz-Carlton Dallas. Work has just finished on the new Ritz-Carlton Aruba.

A new concept for Ritz-Carlton

The Dorado Beach property is the second in a series of Ritz-Carlton’s new Reserve luxury resorts. Each is planned as a unique destination property, designed to incorporate the four natural elements – earth, air, water and fire. The exclusive Dorado Beach property offers 100 guest rooms and 14 single-bedroom residences. Guest amenities include a 56-hole golf course, spa/fitness center, two gourmet restaurants and lounge.

Hollywood Woodwork was selected to manufacture, finish and install wood cabinetry, wood and metal trim, decking and wall accents in the interior of many of the hotel’s private rooms and public areas. Hollywood partnered with the resort’s owner, Caribbean Property Group; SB Architects of San Francisco and Miami; contractor Caribbean Industrial Construction (CIC) Group, San Juan, Puerto Rico; and DBR Development Management, LLC, Dorado, Puerto Rico, throughout the one and a half year project.

The hotel is designed and built to LEED® Silver standards, making it one of the top 100 most sustainable hotels in the world. One of Hollywood Woodwork’s contributions to the sustainability effort was its use of Sherwin-Williams formaldehyde free Sher-Wood® F3 Kemvar® Varnish for all interior millwork finishes.

A sustainable solution

Hollywood Woodwork has partnered with Sherwin-Williams for more than 12 years.

“During that time, Sherwin-Williams has always provided us with their excellent technical knowledge,” said Hollywood Woodwork Project Manager Bill Knight. “They have been a big part of the success of our finishing team. They consistently support our business needs, and working with their local reps and distribution and service facilities leads to hands-on success. They are in our shop working side-by-side with our finishers to ensure quality.”

A member of the U.S. Green Building Council, Hollywood Woodwork has high sustainability standards of its own. It cites the fact that Sherwin-Williams offers a comprehensive portfolio of environmentally responsible products to help meet the company’s green initiatives.

Given the LEED requirements of the Dorado Beach Reserve project, Hollywood Woodwork selected the new formaldehyde free varnish from Sherwin-Williams. In fact, they were the first company to use the varnish after testing it in their finishing department.

As the interest in improving indoor air quality increases globally, Sherwin-Williams saw the opportunity to develop a line of finishing products that would eliminate formaldehyde and the emissions it produces during the application and curing process. The formaldehyde free varnish used by Hollywood Woodwork was formulated to be a drop-in replacement for traditional conversion varnishes, offering the same look, application and performance. It reduces odor during application as well as employee exposure to formaldehyde during curing. It also helps to minimize complaints during product installation or unpacking, when residual formaldehyde emissions may be the most noticeable. Another advantage is that the finish has achieved GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification and meets air quality specifications set by LEED-IAQ and BIFMA.

The drop-in capability of the new finish allowed Hollywood Woodwork to use the same spray equipment that it uses for standard conversion varnish, eliminating the need and cost of equipment replacement.

The formaldehyde free finish was used on millwork installed in the luxury resort’s guest rooms, residences, fitness center, spa, lounge, restaurants and public areas. The Dorado Reserve, with its formaldehyde free interiors, greeted its first guests on December 12, 2012.

A sustainable partnership

Hollywood Woodwork prides itself on its ability to deliver one-of-a-kind architectural solutions for its customers. Its selection of Sherwin-Williams as a coatings partner is a part of that pride.

“For this project, the Ritz-Carlton Reserve purchased the quality craftsmanship of Hollywood Woodwork, which has the support of a great coatings partner, Sherwin-Williams,” Knight concluded.
