Formable Veneer Keeps Herman Miller Sitting Pretty

Molded veneer, in particular, continues to make inroads in the marketplace. Geiger, for example, used Danzer’s patented 3D-Furnier veneer in its Clamshell chair, which won gold in the 2012 Best of NeoCon product competition. Now, Herman Miller is making news with its use of the 3D veneer in one of its latest Eames chair offerings.

Available in a range of finish and base options, Herman Miller currently offers the moulded wood shell in the following species: white ash, walnut and santos palisander.

It’s a new look for the famous moulded plastic chair. To manufacture the 3D veneer for the moulded chair, sliced or rotary cut wood veneer is cut into small strips. Danzer’s 3D technology then deep draws the veneer. According to Danzer, this results in closed surface, with a high degree of stability for the formed mats.

With its 3D veneer, Danzer says, the grain pattern follows the shape of the part. A lightweight product, Danzer’s 3D veneer can be used for flat as well as curved parts. At interzum, where Danzer exhibited the product, the company announced the development of 3D inner layers, which will further enhance the usability, and stability of the veneer product.
