Georgia-Pacific Closes Wisconsin Engineered Wood Products Plant

PHILLIPS, WI - Georgia-Pacific will close its engineered wood products facility in Phillips, Wisconsin, by the end of October, eliminating 53 jobs.

A Georgia-Pacific spokesman told WAOW TV the closure comes after years of declining demand for the wood paneling and specialty wood products produced by the facility, which has been operating at less than 70 percent capacity. Built in 1958, the plant was one of seven G-P mills in Wisconsin.

A WARN notice was filed in Wisconsin on Aug. 28 for the closure.

Fight Brewing For Control of Ethan Allen at Annual Meeting

Ethan Allen Chairman and CEO Farooq Kathwari has responded to a shareholder letter sent August 26 questioning the management of the company. Thomas Sandell, whose group owns 5.5% of Ethan Allen, said "sub-optimal fiscal policies and inefficient allocation of shareholder capital has resulted in the company`s stock trading at a significant discount to its intrinsic value."

I am still trying to wrap my head around the innovations and new products introduced at interzum and LIGNA in May. It was impressive and to say that I can recall everything I’ve seen there without my notes would be a lie. All the more reason then to look forward to the Woodworking Machinery & Supply Conference and Expo (WMS) 2015 in Toronto this November.
