GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Kindel Furniture Co. is expanding its luxury brand of residential and contract furniture offerings with the acquisition of Councill Co. LLC. Included in the purchase are all of Councill's case goods and the majority of upholstery products. Financial terms of the deal, announced July 9, were not disclosed.

Kindel's announcement that it acquired the intellectual property of the Denton, NC-based furniture maker comes little more than three months after RHF Investments acquired some of Councill Furniture's assets as part of a larger group acquisition and  Councill made plans to close its Denton manufacturing facilities.

Moore Councill

Founded in 1973, Councill produced transitional as well as traditional styles of furniture. The company's furniture production will be transitioned to Grand Rapids, and additional employees will be hired, according to Kindel. Moore Councill, son of company founder Fred Councill, has been hired as senior vice president of sales for all Kindel brands and will help drive domestic as well as international sales.

The acquisition follows on the heels of Kindel's purchase last year of Karges Furniture Co., a family-owned manufacturer of high-end, American-made furniture for more than 100  years. Founded in 1901 and based in Grand Rapids, Kindel is a family-owned manufacturer of American-made, high-end custom furniture.

"The combined companies of Kindel, Karges and Councill now reflect the best of the best in American craftsmanship, quality and timeless designs," said James Fisher, Kindel owner and chairman of the board. "The growth opportunities for Kindel and its stable of brands are enormous. We strive to be the company that builds to order and offers custom capabilities in the most extensive sense. It is a natural for Councill to join the Kindel companies."
