Hafele forms furniture hardware engineering unit

COLOGNE, GERMANY - Wood manufacturing hardware firm Hafele said today it has launched a furniture industrial engineering business.
Hafele Engineering GmbH & Co. KG, to be based at Hafele's Nagold, Germany headquarters, will consolidate production development already done for casegoods, furnishings and other markets across the company's major business sectors. The announcement came in a specially called press conference at Interzum 2011, the wood materials industry trade show taking place in Cologne, Germany.

"This company will be active across borders," said Sibylle Thierer, managing director of Hafele Group in making the announcement. The move comes in response to shifting demographics that is affecting social behavior, and consumer buying patterns, said Thierer. Smaller homes and escalating offices rentals are leading to new requirements among Hafele's customer base of casegoods, cabinetry and furnishing firms.
"In the future, industry will ask for services we were not able to produce under our previous structure," she said.
Rupert Richler was named general manager of Hafele Engineering GmbH. He said current engineering activities across existing Hafele units account for about 20 percent of the €81 million in 2010 sales for the privately held, 5,000-employee firm. The division will allow Hafele to leverage engineering of its functional furniture and cabinetry hardware to the specialized needs of the furniture industry.
"All engineered products will bear the slogan,"`Engineered by Hafele,´" Richler said. The personnel for the new division were assembled bz 40 key managers who drew an additional 170 employees from across Hafele. Richler said Hafeles global positioning - it has 37 subsidiaries around the world - give it access to market trends. "We collect market intelligence and knowledge from 37 subsidiaries and sales offices," Richler said, giving Hafele "intimate understanding of user preferences in all corners of the world. And this is knowledge that directly influences our consulting capabilities about applicatinos for hardware tehnologies."
