MCGRAW, NY - Custom-made cherry wood boxes will hold the world's attention for a few moments after President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden Jr. The two will be presented with matching gifts at the 2013 inaugural luncheon following the swearing in ceremonies at the U.S. Capitol.
The pair of custom crafted boxes, produced by McGraw Wood Products of McGraw, NY, hold one-fo-a-kind 17-inch tall custom-made Lenox crystal vases, produced by the Bristol, PA china and glass company for the occasion.
Lenox Corp. offered the gifts to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, which runs the event for Congress. Lenox is the oldest maker of fine china in the United States, and has created the inaugural gift for the incoming president since 1989, usually working for months to create a gift that encapsulates the spirit of the American people and the new presidency.
McGraw Wood Products has produced inaugural gift boxes for Lenox before: in 2005 large hurricane lamps were given Bush for his inauguration, also cased in its custom-crafted boxes.
McGraw Wood Products is a third-generation family owned business that produces a wide range of custom designed wood storage boxes, widely used for silverware, often tailored to the specific dimensions and designs of flatware it holds.
McGraw Wood's boxes are delivered fully lined and finished- so as McGraw notes at its website, it "fabricates in many media (plastic, cloth, glass, etc.). with our primary emphasis where wood is utilized on select grades of northern hardwoods such as cherry, red oak, poplar, walnut, etc."
Lenox master glass-cutter Peter O'Rourke worked on the project for more than five months. Timothy Carder, Lenox VP Design, handed over the glass vases encased in McGraw Wood Products' cherry boxes to Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) on Friday.
