MORGANTON, NC - Most of Henredon's flagship wood furniture plant, closed in late 2007, has been torn down to make way for a new Walmart Supercenter.
Development plan for former Henredon Furniture manufacturing complex in Morganton, NC The plant employed more than 500 people when Furniture Brands Intl, parent company of Henredon, announced its plans to shut down its operations.
A 90,000-square-foot building of the Henredon complex remains intact, according to the Morganton News Herald. WRS, developer of the site is looking for an alternative use for the newer portion of the factory, including potentially incorporating the structure into the new Walmart-anchored shopping center, scheduled to open in late 2013.
Construction of the first Henredon plant began in 1946. By 1981 the Henredon Furniture manufacturing complex consisted of five buildings, totaling 2.5 million square feet and employed 2,600 people, according to the News Herald.
