Dorel Recalls More than 860,000 Child Proofing Locks

WASHINGTON - Dorel Juvenile Group Inc. has issued a voluntary recall for approximately 685,000 Safety 1st cabinet locks and 183,000 Safety 1st toilet locks following reports of young children being able to disengage the locks.

Dorel Cabinet Slide Lock Recall The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission was joined by Health Canada in announcing the recall of the Chinese-made locks.

"Young children can unexpectedly disengage the toilet locks and gain access to water in the toilet, posing the risk of drowning. The cabinet locks are being recalled because young children can disengage the lock, posing the risk of injury from dangerous or unsafe items stored in the cabinet," the CPSC said.

Dorel Juvenile Group of Columbus, IN, said it has received 278 reports of the plastic cabinet slide lock failing to adequately secure the cabinet. In 71 of those incidents, children between 8 months and 5 years were able to disengage the lock. In one case, a child swallowed toxic beads and required treatment at a hospital.

Consumers are urged to remove the recalled locks, emplty any harmful contents from the cabinet and contact Dorel for a free replacement lock.
