Following a request by Hardwood Checkoff opponents, the woodworking industry now has until Sept. 7 to submit comments on the proposed program, which sets a tax on lumber producers to help promote wood sales, similar to the "Got Milk?" and "Pork: The Other White Meat" ad programs. Some timber and lumber producers do not want to see the program launched.
Timber investment firm Rayonier Inc. has expanded its holdings with the acquisition of approximately 18,000 acres of timberland in southwest Louisiana and northwest Oregon from BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group. Combined, the two transactions totaled $59.5 million.

Franklin International covered the cost for 3,500 trees to be planted in the Wilds Conservation Center located in southeastern Ohio. The species of trees that were planted were indigenous to that part of the Ohio river valley. The species include: red oak, chestnut oak, black walnut, sugar maple, and tulip poplar.
New orders for residential furniture grew 3 percent in April compared to a year earlier, according to the latest survey of manufacturers and distributors by High Point accounting and consulting firm Smith Leonard. Overall, 68 percent of those surveyed said they had increased their orders.
