How much does it cost to remodel a kitchen? According to a national survey by Home Advisor, the average reported cost was $19,920. Based on 3,522 cost profiles in the report, most homeowners spent between $11,194 and $28,646.

Kitchen remodels are popular and have the largest payoff in terms of increasing a home’s resale value. A smaller project between $11,000 and $15,000 may include painting walls, refacing cabinets and upgrading the sink and backsplash. A renovation of more than $30,000 may include custom cabinets, hardwood floors, granite countertops and high-end appliances.

Cabinetry and hardware is the largest part of a kitchen remodel, accounting for 29 percent, according to the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Countertops make up 10 percent of the cost, and installation is 17 percent of overall cost. Other cost items include design fees, appliances, lighting, flooring, and walls and ceilings.

The Home Advisor report includes suggestions on how to reduce costs, and specific areas that are worthwhile, such as LED lighting, increasing storage space, pullout countertops and smaller appliances. See http://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/kitchens/remodel-a-kitchen/ for more information.
