Janie Lowrie of Closet Theory is a finalist in the 2014 Top Shelf Design Awards competition with her project "Los Feliz, CA HIS Walk-In" entered in the Closet: Wood less than 18 linear feet category.
Project Description: Nestled in the hills of Los Feliz, CA, this masculine HIS walk-in closet is approximately 90 square feet. To draw out the rich masculinity, this closet was built in mahogany and we paid very careful attention to the lighting by integrating light-up rods, in-cabinetry lighting, general and pendant lighting.
List materials used in the project, including wood, veneer, laminate, hinges, decorative accessories, etc.: Mahogany stained wood cabinetry with crown and base cedar lined drawers for cashmere sweaters. Furniture accessories include: custom made bench lingerie inserts, pull-out hooks, sunglass drawer, integrated light up rods, integrated bureau, lighting pendant, lighting, flat adjustable shoe shelves, full length framed mirror, and letterpress wallpaper.
Describe any design challenges, i.e. obstructions, etc.: The main challenge for this closet was the windows. In order to block as much of the UV out of the closet, we incorporated frosted glass windows. This also added an element of privacy inside the closet as well.
Was the design created by hand or software program? If software program, which one did you use?: AUTOCAD
Describe the installation process and any challenges.: The installation of this closet occurred simultaneously with HER closet, which took approximately two weeks. Aside from normal remodeling challenges, such as various vendors working on top of each other, the installation went very smoothly.
Winners will be announced April 9 during a gala awards reception at the 2014 Cabinets & Closets Conference & Expo at the Hotel Somerset-Bridgewater.
