When Joni Rae Russell embarked on a remodel of her closet, which Closets has been following over several issues – little did she know that her vision of a modern walk-in that blended with the architecture of her home would not only provide a luxury oasis but would also win honorable mention in a national design contest – Top Shelf Design awards.

In designer Harut Varuzhanyan, Artwood Designs, Russell found someone who understood her vision and shared a similar taste in style with winning results.
The closet uses a combination of White and Coroba Pine melamine, which presented a challenge because all the corners had to be mitered to get a clean finish, says Varuzhanyan. The fact that the back wall was at a slight (about 15 degree) angle increased the challenge even further.
But the most difficult challenge was to create the horizontal, floating look Russell was after without the support of a perpendicular structure. It was solved with a semi-concealed, heavy-duty metal bracing system, from Hafele America, which firmly supports the weight of the shelves and rods.
“Joni came to me with a specific look she was after,” he says. “She knew she wanted a clean, horizontal look. She showed me tear sheets of closets that appealed to her. I measured her long and short hang, shoe cubbies, jewelry, and glasses etc, took everything she gave me and did the schematic design and some drawings with 3D renderings.
We went back and forth a few times and made some compromises finding the right balance between aesthetics and functionality.”
