Etsy, the online retailers that is a storefront for thousands of custom woodworkers, named American Express exec Josh Silverman as its new CEO.

Launched last year to take on Etsy, wood products at the e-tailer Handmade at Amazon are rising in price and style, as established woodworkers tap into Amazon's millions of online customers.

Martha Stewart's American Made furniture and home furnishings line opened a store at Amazon's Handmade marketplace, leaving eBay where it opened in 2013. The online custom woodworking and maker markets are heating, with Custommade.com trailing and Etsy facing big challenges for the custom made crafts marketplace. Handmade at Amazon, launched Oct. 8, 2015, has more than 200,000 items from 10,000 approved artisans.

Etsy is opening Etsy Manufactruring, a marketplace for its online sellers to find and connect directly with manufacturers. The move is a departure from its individual crafter-sales model. Etsy says it will launch later this year, with wholesale manufacturers restricted to the U.S. and Canada supplying four categories of its online merchants: apparel and textiles, machining and fabrication, printing, and jewelry and metalwork.
