Small Wood Shop Considerations: Drilling Down on Boring Tips1. When purchasing a machine, consider the machine’s composition and configuration, including its weight, material quality, type of table and electronics. Is there a need for both vertical as well as horizontal drilling?

2. Boring machines are being used for everything from simple drilling to complex applications, so flexibility is key. The choice of an overhead CNC working center, vs. a stationary single-side CNC drill and dowel machine or a feedthrough machine also depends on the batch size, part characteristics, etc.

3. Is there a need for the machine to communicate with design software or have programs downloaded from the office? Also consider having multiple reference systems for part placement flexibility.

4. Always of importance are good quality tools and tool holders for use with the machines. The proper tool holders will help minimize vibration and extend the life of the parts.
