Building fine handcrafted custom furniture to designer's specifications is our hallmark at Masterpiece Woodworks. We use an old world approach, combined with cutting edge building skills along with fresh exploration of materials and provide personalized, hands-on service for our customers throughout New England and beyond.

We’re always looking at better ways to serve the interior design community and are pleased to now offer The Studio - a designated space in our Avon, MA facility for those design professionals to collaborate with our team on their clients’ custom pieces.

Recently opened, The Studio offers designers a comfortable work-room setting equipped with an impressive collection of furniture details, leg samples, molding and top section options, finish samples of both woods and exotic materials and decorative hardware. Additionally, a variety of finished pieces - including room encasements, cabinetry built-ins, freestanding furniture and home accent pieces are also on display.

As part of our design process for every piece, 2D and 3D shop drawings are delivered to a client for approval, prior to production, along with finish samples. The new studio space gives the option to work with our creative team from the first sketch, streamlining the process.

We’ve created a welcoming space where designers can come to design their clients’ furniture. We’re focusing on hands-on interaction between the designer and our staff to assist with overall design direction, details, scale, joinery, and finish and material selection. We also encourage designers to bring clients who might want to see in person the color and texture of the piece they want created, this is especially helpful if the client is on the fence about some of their choices.

 At Masterpiece's The Studio:
• Client / creative team collaborate
• Client reviews 2D or 3D drawings
• Patterns, designs 'carved' on CNC
• Drawing for Nevelson-style cabinet

Part of The Studio experience is the ability to replicate any pattern into a customers’ design, including those almost impossible to copy manually. Here we use our ShopSabre CNC - a piece of equipment that allows us to take a design, be it from fabric, wallpaper or even a sketch from a designers’ imagination - and import that pattern into our CAD system. From there we can route the pattern onto cabinet doors, panels, home accessories, etc.

It allows us to create a design that would not be possible to that precision by hand, and repeat it accurately across an unlimited number of panels. The CNC router completes the cuts in minutes, where hand-carving would be cost prohibitive for most projects.

For example, our most recent project using the CNC router was to create a series of three cabinet door faces designed after the American sculptor Louis Nevelson. The cabinet doors were routed in multiple layers of material, stacked, and finished in multiple colors of satin lacquer to achieve the built up design. Mirror accents were slipped into the first plane adding to the three dimensional complexities. At project completion, we knew this was a technology that would strengthen our own design process.

This specific play of layering pattern, both geometric and organic, is very popular in interior design; it allows us to design pieces that are simultaneously trendy yet classic, giving our customers unprecedented options for creating custom, one-of-a-kind creations for their own clients.

We’ve seen a growing trend this past year where pattern has become again increasingly popular in interior design. The one-two punch of using technology such as that of the CNC tool along with offering the Studio space is a great way to strengthen our design reach and capabilities.

Industry trade journals and word of mouth from leading tastemakers declare 2014 design trends are spotlighting the return of bespoke furnishings. Here at Masterpiece Woodworks, we’re providing the space, technology, and assistance to make the unique process of producing these custom pieces creative, easy, and fun for our clients.
