Sher-Wood® SB Stain System: Non-Wiping Spray Finish is Consistent, Durable

When it comes to staining interior wood products, color consistency is key. For example, kitchen cabinet components that don’t match lead to costly rework, wasting time and cutting into profit margins. Sherwin-Williams SHER-WOOD® SB Spray Stain finishing system offers significant benefits that ensure batch-to-batch consistency and excellent clarity.

The SHER-WOOD® SB Stain System: Non-Wiping Spray Finish Formula Delivers Color Consistency, Durability

What It Is: SB Spray Stain

SHER-WOOD SB Spray Stain is Sherwin-Williams Product Finishes’ next generation stain platform for use on interior wood products. It offers a sprayable, high production alternative to traditional wipe stains used on interior bare wood, virtually doubling application speed for greater stain operation efficiency. The new SHER-WOOD SB Spray Stain bases utilize 16 high-strength colorants in high production, solvent bases that provide clean, vibrant color and improved settling characteristics. And it offers fast, repeatable color matching with tight tolerances.

The Value Effect: What does that mean to wood finishers? It means batch-to-batch color consistency and custom spray stain appearance that significantly reduces mismatched components and curtails the need for rework, saving manufacturers time and money. It also means better line efficiency and streamlined handling of parts because spray guns don’t need to be cleaned as often or deal with wiping methods and application inconsistencies.

SHER-WOOD SB Spray Stain also offers expanded color capability, which means that there is no need to add outside colorants that can cause package stability concerns, resulting in hard settling and batch repeat issues. The stain bases are custom blend formulas that significantly increase the speed of application, cutting material handling times. Not all colorants are created equal.

The Spray Difference: Some colors and appearances can only be achieved by spray no-wipe stains. Spray stains, for example, can achieve a “softer” appearance than stains applied by wiping. A spray application can help give a muted grain definition and custom look or feel to the desired color. Depending on the species of wood, the spray method might better showcase the color and shade of the wood (as it helps with wood inefficiencies). However, there may be situations where a dye application and wipe stain application (two separate stain steps) are needed to achieve the desired final appearance.

Spray stains look softer, with not as much grain highlighting or grain definition. The spray somewhat mutes the grain. Solvent blend selection is not directly driven by shop environment; however, it can be driven by appearance. A slower solvent blend will allow for more penetration and darker appearance. That said, there will be instances where environmental regulations or local permitting may dictate the solvents used, as well as ambient or shop temperature, wood species and other factors.

Key Influences:

1. Color consistency reduces costly rework, enhances profitability.

2. Spray, no wipe  – Less handling, faster throughput.

3. Customization – Three formulas to use as a tool or guide to best formulate your line.

4. It’s SB Stain – Cleaner and darker colors; improved, hard settling resistant pigments; package stability and batch repeat.

Benefiting Your Market: Color consistency means getting the job done right the first time. And while the colorants are already successful on their own, the solvent blends provide a value proposition that makes them more efficient with reduced handling, material and waste costs. Slower blend options can also provide better results where applicators are spraying in very warm conditions.
