An Ash Chest Lined with Cedar Ripples

Bespoke furniture created by Edward Johnson and his colleagues is contemporary and timeless, and awesomely crafted. Here's how Johnson describes this ash Ripples chest, and his approach:

This was the first of what has developed into our Rippled Collection. My initial self-set brief was to push laminating in a new direction and develop it in line with my emerging style, an elegant, clean and fluid form which lets the material add the details. The design stemmed from the action of a stone dropping into water and sending concentric ripples outwards, which to produce on a flat surface in wood, you might think would be challenging enough, however I wanted to go further and drape the ripples over the entire cabinet, bringing movement and life to the entire piece not just one surface. Well, that was the idea and it certainly proved to be a challenge.

A Round Table as Canvas for Abstract Art

NK Woodworking & Design's Nathie Katzoff details a blend of Figured Walnut, American Cherry and Sapele in a conference table.

Ripples was the result of my ambitions and sense of adventure which tends to lead me down paths unknown, at times it was more exciting than any other piece I’ve ever made, and at times it was enormously frustrating! Each of the twelve hand cut dovetailed drawers open with the slightest of touch on the front, sliding out with ease and surprise to release that aromatic aroma of the cedar with which they are lined.

We are a small creative furniture workshop where design, craftsmanship and engineering skills come together to craft and sculpt our client’s ideas into beautiful pieces of furniture for their homes. Founded and run by designer maker Edward Johnson, we work primarily to commission producing one-off pieces of furniture in response to our clients design briefs and occasionally when time allows we will produce pieces for exhibition. Our clients, found locally, across Britain and even worldwide are a mix of private patrons, architects and interior designers. Our design studio and high tech workshop is situated on the south coast of England, near Chichester in the picturesque village of Bosham, bordering Hampshire and West Sussex. www.ejbespokefurniture.co.uk
