Custom Woodworkers Liked How-to Video Stories in 2012
By Bill Esler | 12/20/2012 9:09:00 AM
Custom woodworkers flocked to reports on portable sawmills, active wood design, unique joinery, drag knives for inlay and marquetry, and videos that tell things like how to make a spiral table leg or steam bend oak for a bench.
Phoebe's Table Dance by Saturn Design Woodworking posted in November was among the most popular. It showed a round table that unfurls through artful hardware and wood cutting by Robert Huskey, owner of the Seattle shop. The table is composed of up to 24 leaves that can be set on each other within a 30 degree range of arc. Huskey plans to patent the design. Watch now
The quality of Huskey's video is very good - he accompanies it on guitar. Another awesome video that proved popular was made by Brian Grabski, master wood craftsman at Designed and Made Custom Woodwork, Minneapolis. His raises contemporary woodworking video to a level of art on a parallel with the best photography, and finest examples of woodcraft itself. Mike Jarvi also produced an amazing video, taking an oak log and converting it to his signature design bench showing how he saws, mills, resaws, sands, steams and bends the oak.
Most important to woodworkers is how to adapt technology to make money - a fact reflected in many of the most viewed items in 2012:
