An RTA Powder Room for Kitty
WWN's Top 10: Robots Edge Out Hot Wood

Paul  "Cat-man-doo-doo," Pettys, president of Out of Sight Litter Box Inc. of Rock Hills, SC, offers an unusual solution to a common problem: unsightly kitty litter boxes and related messes.

Pettys built his first cat-dedicated powder room in his garage in 2002. The product was a hit with friends and friends of friends. Soon his product was being sold at local and state-wide pet stores. Then he showed his product at a national pet product show and got discovered by pet supply catalogers and pet stores around the country.

Business was so good that to keep up with increased demand, he signed a license with a large RTA furniture company to manufacture and distribute his product. Soon after, things took a turn for the worse.

"Without notice late in 2006, that company shut down, a similar situation to the Wall Street mess," Pettys writes on his company's website.

Pettys successfully took legal action to win back his licensing rights, but he lost a lot of momentum and virtually had to start over in the process.

In 2009, Out of Sight hooked up with Koops Woodworks LLC, a manufacturer of custom case goods, to produce its products.

"We know that the cost of quality is a long-term value and worth the higher price...We do not take short cuts like many of the other manufacturers do," Pettys notes on the website. "We use high-grade plastic coat melamine, not hot-pressed painted cardboard or paper coated chip board. All our panel edges are sealed with edge banding, even the 'blind' edges you won't see after assembly. And we are Made in the USA."

The cabinets are shipped to customers ready-to-assemble. Once assembled they measure 20 inches wide by 23-3/4 inches deep by 28 3/4 inches tall. Each unit weighs approximately 55 pounds.

A cat enters the cabinet commode via a 9-inch-wide by 11-1/2-inch tall door. The pet owner accesses the hidden litter box via a top lid opening.

The Out of Sight Litter Boxes are available in white melamine or hard rock maple melamine at a cost of $199.95 and $219.95 respectively, plus $29.95 shipping.
