Cuts in wood funding praised

WASHINGTON, DC - Elimination of wood research project funding in a new Senate finance bill won praise by a watchdog group.

"Appropriators deserve credit for finally eliminating earmarks for wasteful projects such as wood utilization research and shrimp aquaculture," said Citizens Against Government Waste in its preliminary analysis of the $137 bilion Senate version of the fiscal year 2012 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill.

Although the bill contains fewer earmarks than CAGW is accustomed to seeing in Agriculture appropriations bills, the dollar amount remains substantial. “Any earmark is one too many given the current moratorium and the nation’s fiscal crisis,” stated CAGW President Tom Schatz, citing a $40 million grant to eliminate cotton boll weevils as an example of waste.
